I’ve been rolling my own blunts since 1993. Since then, I’ve smoked almost every cigarillo brand and flavor, including Backwoods, which is one of my all-time favorites! Not only have I smoked Backwoods cigars for over 30 years, but I’ve also tried every flavor more than once! I have my stripes to rap about this topic, so this is what I have to say about all these flavors!

As for my ratings, well, they’re just my opinions, so you may totally disagree with me; if you do, then sound off in the comments below and let everyone know the best flavors according to you! However, for all you true bud smokers out there who know what’s up, I think you’ll agree that my list and ratings are on the money! On that note, let’s put one in the air and talk about it.

1. Sweet Aromatic Backwoods

Getting straight to the point, Sweet Aromatic is the best Backwoods flavor ever made! It’s my #1 go-to flavor and has been for a few years now! Not to say that I don’t get in the mood for other flavors because I do, but when I’m not feeling choosey or just want something familiar that I know won’t end in disappointment, I reach for this sweet, aromatic flavor every time. ★★★★★

2. Original Backwoods

Honestly, I almost list this one as my #1 top pick because, just like Sweet Aromatic Backwoods, Original also never disappoints! However, I like a little sweetness with my cigars, but when I can’t find my preferred choice, I’m definitely reaching for a pack of Original Backwoods before any other flavor unless I’m in the mood for something different. ★★★★★

3. Black Russian Backwoods

As you can see by now, I’m really into authentic-tasting cigars! I like those deep, dark, original flavors that are bold and distinctive! So, if you’re like me, chances are, you’re a dude, and you’ll love these cigars if you already don’t, especially if you have a lovejones for iced vodka! Once considered a limited-edition flavor, I think they’re here to stay! ★★★★

4. Dark Leaf Backwoods

It was a real toss-up between Dark Leaf and Black Russian, but in the end, I went with this order. Nonetheless, I really like dark, natural-leaf cigars, so these are a slam dunk every time! Plus, they’re slightly sweet and aromatic, which I like even more. Although I wish they were a little sweeter, I have no complaints. ★★★★

5. Dark Stout Backwoods

I bet everyone reading this who loves all the other Backwoods flavors I haven’t mentioned is going crazy right now! Don’t worry; they’re coming soon! As for Dark Stout, it was another toss-up between three and four, but I put it in fifth place because I wish it had a little more cocoa and coffee flavor. In that case, it would’ve been a third favorite Backwoods flavor! ★★★★

6. Generation Now Backwoods

Generation Now is the latest Backwoods edition at the time of this posting. Made with a premium-aged broadleaf maduro wrapper, I recently found these cigars to be authentic-tasting and smooth. They had a fresh tobacco flavor, which I enjoyed! Named after an ATL-based recording label, this is the first Backwoods collab of its kind, and I hope to see more! Check out our full review here. ★★★★

7. Vanilla Backwoods

I don’t know about y’all, but I waited a long time for these to drop! Once they did, I was among the first people in the United States to buy them! Initially, they were only available in Europe and Asia, but in 2023, they finally became available. Made with an all-natural Connecticut broadleaf, these cigarillos are easily the best vanilla-flavored cigars on the market. ★★★★

8. Russian Cream Backwoods

Regarding flavor, Russian Cream Backwoods is similar to Dark Russian, although slightly lighter, sweeter, and smoother—which isn’t bad, especially if you like it that way! Like most Woods, this option is also made with a premium Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, so it’s authentic-tasting and slow-burning, just as we like! ★★★★

9. Cognac XO Backwoods

Smooth and sweet, Cognac XO Backwoods is a limited-edition option you must try, especially if you enjoy alcohol-inspired cigar flavors! Made with a dark, aged Connecticut broadleaf, these cigarillos are sweet-tasting and smooth. As for the flavor, the package says “fine cognac,” but I would say it’s more like “cheap cognac.” Nonetheless, they’re still enjoyable! ★★★★

10. Dark Berry Backwoods

Backwoods Dark Berry offers a rich mix of sweet berry flavor and natural tobacco. The berry notes are bold but balanced with the earthy tobacco, creating a full-bodied experience. It’s a great choice for those who prefer stronger, fruitier cigars, but it may be too intense for lighter flavor fans. This is the latest addition to the growing line of Backwoods flavors at the time of this posting, and as with all flavors, I was one of the first people in the world to try them, and I love ’em! ★★★★

11. Grape Backwoods

Like vanilla, I waited many years for Grape Backwoods to drop in the US, then in 2023, the wait was over! As with all new Backwoods flavors, I’m usually one of the first people in the country to try them; Grape was no exception! Unfortunately, they didn’t last long, maybe a few months, then they were discontinued. Gone but not forgotten, I still give them an easy four stars! ★★★★

12. Banana Backwoods

I’m not much into fruity-flavored cigars like I was back in the days when there was still such a thing as regs, but nowadays, we have fire bud, and I like to taste my herbs. Too much flavor, especially fruity flavors, can cover the natural bud flavors, which is what I don’t like. However, with the right bud and mood, this Backwoods favor is on point and authentic tasting! Plus, it’s now one of the best-selling flavors from this brand. ★★★★

13. Wild Rum Backwoods

Wild Rum Backwoods is smooth and sweet, with a tropical rum flavor mixed with light vanilla notes, made with a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. They’re not my favorite Backwoods flavor, but they’re definitely nice every now and then! Originally a limited-edition flavor, I think they’re here to stay! In fact, I’m kind of in the mood for one now! ★★★★

14. Honey Backwoods

For as long as I can remember, there’s always been Honey Backwoods! Once a favorite, these cigarillos are true to flavor and quality! As expected, they’re sweet, slightly sticky, and slow-burning! I recently had one after many years, and it was the same experience! My only complaint is that I wish they had a stronger honey flavor, maybe in another time! ★★★

15. Honey Berry Backwoods

I know this rating might piss some of y’all off, and I’m sorry if it does, but like Honey Backwoods, Berry Honey is also lacking honey flavor! You can taste the mixed berry flavors; they nailed that part, but the honey just isn’t hittin’ enough for me! On a positive note, they’re still sweet, smooth, and berry-tasting. They’re not really for me, but your girl loves them, though! ★★★

16. Honey Bourbon Backwoods

As you can see from the last three honey flavors, Backwoods really went hard for their honey-inspired cigars. Even though they didn’t hit hard for me, they’re still much better than other honey-flavored cigars from other brands. Honey Bourbon has a strong bourbon flavor that overpowers the honey, so I wish they had a little more authentic appeal. ★★★

17. Chocolate Backwoods

Agree or disagree, Chocolate Backwoods were a little disappointing. They weren’t bad; however, the chocolate flavor was too overpowering, in my opinion! I had some fire bud; all I could taste was chocolate, nothing else, not even tobacco or the broadlead! Luckily, I like chocolate, but maybe they’ll get the message and turn it down a notch! ★★

Backwoods Select Cigars

I decided to review Backwoods Select cigars separately as they’re not part of the traditional line of Backwoods flavors. These Woods feature premium wrappers, including Guatemala, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. I found each one to be extremely different from the other, and best of all, I liked them all, especially the Pennsylvania Primo, which has a strong, robust tobacco flavor that’s deep and earthly—something I really appreciate! Where to Buy Backwoods Cigars

Luckily, you won’t have to go far to buy or try all these Backwoods flavors mentioned on this list. In fact, you don’t even have to leave your seat because you can buy them all right here at Bluegrass Tobacco, America’s #1 discount smoke shop! Here, you’ll find every flavor and package option except single packs. My favorite choice is the 8-pack box with five Backwoods per pack; however, you can also choose from 10-packs of 3 and the 24-count box, which comes with 24 single packs.

As for myself, I work here at Bluegrass Tobacco, so, of course, this is where I go to get all my Backwoods, but even if I didn’t work here, still, this is where I’d go to get my cigars or any other tobacco-related products, except cigarettes. The prices are far cheaper than buying from a gas station or even a traditional smoke shop, plus you can have them delivered discreetly, as Bluegrass offers nationwide flat-rate shipping! Best of all, your Backwoods will always arrive fresh because all of our cigars are stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled facility in Newport, Kentucky, so freshness is something we can guarantee!

About Backwoods Cigars

Backwoods cigars were introduced in 1973 and are known for their distinctive packaging and appearance with a frayed end, tapered body, and unfinished head. Altadis USA Inc., a subsidiary of Imperial Brands, manufactures these machine-rolled cigars. They are made with all-natural tobacco leaves for the wrapper and filler, providing a rustic look and aromatic flavor profile reminiscent of traditional cheroots. Backwoods cigars are popular for casual smoking and are often used in the creation of ‘blunts’ by replacing the tobacco with marijuana. They come in several flavors, including Honey Berry, Original, and Sweet Aromatic. Their unique style and variety have made them a favorite among cigar smokers who appreciate a more natural, authentic smoking experience.
